Dr. Iqbal Ahmad is a senior Professor at the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, Aligarh Muslim University Aligarh, India. He has been graduated from Aligarh Muslim University and worked at the Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow (1989-1994) for his doctoral thesis and later joined The Himalaya Drug Company, New Delhi as Research scientist. He has played a pioneer role in framing academic curriculum and research in the Department of Agricultural Microbiology, AMU since 1995 till date. He has also been associated with Department of Biology, Faculty of Applied Science, Umm Al- Qura University, Makkah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, as Visiting Professor in the year 2016 and 2020. In addition to his departmental responsibility he is also Coordinating the Undergraduate, B.Sc. (Hons.) Agriculture and Post graduate, MSc (Ag) Agronomy programmes at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, AMU, Aligarh.
He has guided 15 PhDs and more 60 MSc dissertations, completed five Research Projects, edited 12 books and published more than 250 original research papers/ book Chapters. The research work published has been fairly cited by the International scientific community. More than 17000 citations have been recorded on goggle scholar. Both National and International Ph.D. and Post-doctoral students have been guided by him who received funding from DST, ICMR, FICCI, UGC and IOC, New Delhi.
Prof. Ahmad is the Chief Editor of Journal of Pure and Applied Microbiology and on the editorial and advisory board of many National and International Journals including Scientific Report.
He has got distinguished recognition as listed in Top 2% World Scientist list in the subject wise ranking by the authors from Stanford University, USA which was published in Plos Biology in 2020.
Currently he has been awarded two International Indo-UK Collaborative multi-institutional Research Projects by Department of Biotechnology (DBT) India to tackle the problem of AMR in India for three years w.e.f. Dec. 2020.
Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD), New Delhi, Government of India has selected and sponsored him for training in Leadership Academician Programme( LeAP) in India and in The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA (August 22, to September 15, 2019).
Dr Ahmad has more than 27 years of extensive teaching and research experience in Microbiology and interdisciplinary applied area. His major works are in the area of Applied Microbiology, Environmental and Agricultural aspects of Microbial diversity and bio-prospection. He has significantly contributed in exploring use of traditionally used Indian medical plants as source of anti-infective/anti biofilms against drug resistant microbial pathogens. New Research area established in the laboratory includes Microbial Ecology, AMR, Quorum sensing, Biofilms based PGPR, Mixed biofilms and use of natural and synthetic products including nanoparticle as anti-infective agents.
