Dr. Cao's research is at the interface between microbiology and engineering, focusing on biofilm matrix assembly and role of matrix in environmental and biotechnological applications. Specifically, he is interested in exploring sorptive, transformative, and electroactive properties of biofilm matrix in used water treatment and in biosynthesis of value-added products. Dr. Cao's long-term research objective is to understand and to harness the power of the matrix in biofilm-based processes with an ultimate goal of engineering biofilms through matrix modifications to achieve a better performance in environmental and biotechnological applications.
