Dr. Coenye graduated as M.S. in Biochemistry in 1996. In 2000, he obtained Ph.D. at Ghent University as well. Upon his return to Belgium, he continued his work on the taxonomy of Gram-negative non-fermenters and the use of novel approaches (based on whole-genome sequences) in bacterial taxonomy. For this taxonomic work he received the 2007 Dade Behring MicroScan Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Microbiology and the American Academy for Microbiology. He joined the LPM in April 2005 and was appointed as research professor in 2006. Dr. Coenye had been invited as a keynote speaker in ChinaBiofilms 2017 in Guangzhou China.
